A BOLD NEW TRANSIT LINK ON THE SOUTHBANK? POSSIBLE

IMAGINEER SOMETHING BOLD ON THE SOUTHBANK!

Imagine this as a Transit Idea. Since we seem to have trouble figuring out how to serve Atena, Baptist Medical, Wolfson or Nemouirs Hospitals on the City's curving Southbank, imagine an air conditioned Sky walk from the San Marco Skyway Station to Baptist Hospital. Over the Acosta Freeway, Over the FEC, Over the Parking lots and right to the front doors of the buildings. We could install moving sidewalks, lease out kiosks, food vendor carts and creature comforts, add security, and the city would have a fantastic viewing window on the Southbank. A window with a purpose. With 9,000 current employees ignored by the Skyway and most JTA bus routes, I have been working on a solution, this is just one idea to re-connect 1/2 of 1/4 of our downtown to our downtown. Keeping in mind there are current proposals for massive hospital expansion plus a new 56 floor tower on the drawing boards. This would take a fraction of the money for a busway or new Skyway link, and still tie it all together in seconds. Pull the buses South and East back to Kings Avenue Station and the entire area could be swept clean of street clutter, benches, signs, most buses etc... and the Kings Avenue Station would bloom into the mini-transit center it was designed to be. Skyway trains, Buses galore and future streetcars. IMAGINE.

The arguments rage to this date, "Should have never been built," "waste of taxpayer money," "Doesn't go anywhere," "Nobody rides it..." etc. Bottom line is we have it, and it is finally showing signs of life. Simple extensions to the Stadium, San Marco, and the area of Blue Cross in North Riverside would turn this little train around. Addition of Park and Ride garages and multimodal transit terminals at the end points would bring on the crowds. The video must have been shot on a Sunday Morning, as downtown is certainly as packed with life as any other major City on weekdays. Jacksonville is a city of Bikes, joggers, walkers, buses and cars, one almost wonders how the photographer managed to find this quiet moment.
